Get to Know Kate Merritt

5 Questions with the Designer of Spring Riviére

Kate Merritt is an English Designer/Illustrator living with her family just outside of Paris.

Her career started in London as an art editor, designing magazines, and illustrating children’s books.

She took a year sabbatical to live and experience the culture in Paris, fell in love with the city and decided to stay. She’s been there 10 years now and loves every minute (isn’t that dreamy?!)

In more recent years she has discovered the joy of surface pattern design. Kate has designed three exciting fabric collections for us and has also recently launched a cushion range for HomeSense UK.

Get to know Kate Merritt as we showcase her latest range with us, Spring Riviére, which encapsulates her strolls along the Riviére Marne.

Spring Riviére was inspired by the beautiful River Marne where Kate lives in France. She loves to go for walks along the river to seek floral inspiration for her patterns, and immerse herself in nature.

“This collection was inpsired by a project I did about ‘Kabuki’, which is a type of Japanese theatre. I love the symmetry in the Japanese traditional prints and the dramatic portrayal of mythical beasts especially dragons.”

“I am hugely inspired by nature, fashion, colour etc. Seeking out unusual flower shapes and mixing that with gorgeous colour combinations is what I find most exciting. This collection explores my favourite rich autumn hues and geometric lines.”
